CIVIL & STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING
To help accomplish the goals and objectives of the client with an understanding of the needs for fiscal responsibility, SEC works closely with federal, state, county agencies, municipalities and private sector to complete the tasks.
SEC’s prepared plans and specifications are intended to be in compliance with the applicable governing standards as required. Our understanding and implementation of these standards has been a great asset in providing both timely and cost effective design and construction. |

Site Drainage & Grading: SEC’s engineering designs and analyses not only meet local, state and federal requirements, but provide for best practices for retention/detention, on-site drainage, base flood elevations, conveyance calculations, hydraulic structure analysis and minimum/maximum slope requirements. We use all of this information in determining land development feasibility. SEC generates cross-sections, cut/fill quantities, provides on-site earthwork balance where possible, utilizes 3D terrain modeling, and provides information for reviewers, contractors and inspectors.
Value Engineering & QA /QC: Value Engineering is the systematic application of recognized techniques or approaches to identify alternatives for design solution implementation. These alternatives can be cost effective, functional and time savers, adding value to the project. SEC uses a multi-disciplinary team approach to develop creative options. We believe that value engineering and QA / QC are an on-going process throughout project development and are essential to the overall project success.
Hydrology: SEC’s hydrology work has included projects for both public and private sectors incorporating flood plain delineations, FEMA Letters of Map Amendment (LOMA), regional drainage studies, flood fringe studies, Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP), hydraulic structure analyses and scour analyses. Additionally, SEC uses hydrology to verify negative impacts to properties surrounding development construction. SEC effectively uses HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, TR-55, FLO-2D, Rational Method and the aspects of floodplain hydrology and hydraulics including National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) compliance and incorporation of Best Management Practices (BMPs). Infrastructure Design: SEC provides a full range of stormwater, water and wastewater resource services ranging from analysis concept through design and construction support services. SEC has proven experience in designing efficient and cost-effective solutions. Coupled with strong capabilities in site design, grading, and hydrology, SEC’s background in rural and urban infrastructure design and construction certification is significant. Engineering of water systems including well design, storage tanks, pumps and distribution systems, both public and private, are also part of our firm’s design capability. We also specify wastewater treatment plants, create sewer service systems, incorporate lift stations, detail manholes, create design reports, and make environmental quality submittals for permits. Additionally, SEC has provided utility plans for electric, telephone, natural gas, and TV cable. SEC’s background in liaison with local utility companies during construction, permitting, and installation is vital.
Site Structural Design: Owing to the diverse topographic nature of Northern Arizona, SEC has developed many different solutions to address steep, rocky terrain for development and access. When practical, we apply this knowledge to minimize structural design and installation costs. Site structural design incorporates the evaluation and observation of surrounding properties, soil and geotechnical reports, and proposed development use coupled with design concept implementation. SEC takes pride in minimizing the impact on the surrounding environment, while providing practical and cost effective designs.
Street Design: SEC has designed and prepared engineering drawings, performed construction management and construction surveying for hundreds of miles of roadway throughout Northern Arizona. We work closely with public works departments to design streets, roadways and drives that meet the standards required. Specifically, street designs specify depth of pavement and aggregate base course, meet grade allowances, detail sidewalks including ADA requirements, street drainage including hydraulic structures, balance cut/fill, street plans and profiles and details as well as turning and deceleration lanes. SEC also performs traffic impact analyses. Our positive working relationship with ADOT and the various public works departments at county and municipal levels allow us to design effectively. Agency support allows for implementation from the conceptual phase to expedited approvals and construction.
